Gail Springer in 2012-2013

This spring I will direct the award-winning Flaherty and Ahrens musical, Once on this Island. It opens April 19, 2013 at the Greer Garson Theatre, choreography by Shannon Elliott, music direction by Ron Strauss, set design by Laura Fine Hawkes, lighting design by George Ross Johnson. My most recent performance was in December 2012 at Serenata of Santa Fe's Soiree "Winter Jewels". It was a chilly, snowy afternoon as about 50 music lovers gathered in the cozy home of Eileen and Roy Rogosin, set in the pinon juniper foothills of northern New Mexico. As the winter sun set, the beautiful music began. I sang with four consummate musicians: pianist, Debra Ayers, violinist, L.P. How, oboist, Pamela Epple, and cellist, Sally Guenther. Along with soprano arias by J.S. Bach and Henry Purcell, I premiered a cosmic piece by Ron Strauss, entitled Milonga.

Milonga. Piano and cello generate a gorgeous Tango undercurrent while the singer contemplates her spirituality and karma, making an effort to conceptualize the eternal nature of her soul. As she struggles to embrace the meaning of life with the inadequacy of her conscious mind, she somehow recognizes Truth, even as she is unable to verbalize this recognition in any specific way. By the end of the song she gains some kind of intuitive understanding in the midst of a great mystery.

Earlier this fall I directed four wonderful young actors in Neil LaBute's Reasons to be Pretty at the Greer Garson Theatre on the campus of the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, scenic and lighting design by Chris Conard.
